Collective Improvisation

This documentary takes an intimate look at the impact St. Louis artists have made on the evolution of Jazz.Jazz music initially developed from many streams in the South and on the Eastern Seaboard. These streams were ragtime, blues, church music, Spanish dance rhythms, and the music of marching bands. St. Louis is instrumental in the development of Jazz for a number of reasons. It was the first center for ragtime and the Streckfus Steamers brought jazz musicians into town. Saxophonist Frank Trumbauer grew up here, while Trumpeter Miles Davis was from the East Side. Jazz is uniquely American and jazz performances reflect democracy, in that all participants must contribute for a successful show.
