Engineering a Puck – How SLU Engineers Are Retrofitting a Puck for Blind Hockey Clubs

Intensity, speed, energy – it’s what team members of the St. Louis Blues Blind Hockey Club enjoy most about their games. Their sport looks pretty much like any other hockey game until their steel puck containing eight ball bearings stops moving. No movement equals no sound, and the game grinds to a halt as players are unable to locate the puck. A team of mechanical engineers at St. Louis University is working to improve on the puck’s forty-year-old design with some innovative ideas. The innovations could revolutionize blind hockey and other adaptive sports.
