From Stage to Sound: Behind the Scenes of Live Music

This week on Spotlight, we step inside a historic symphony hall’s $100M transformation to explore how it enhances life on stage for musicians. We go behind the scenes of the intricate art of pipe organ tuning, meet the expert who keeps every note pitch-perfect, and shine a light on the often-overlooked craft of live sound mixing with industry professional Tim Albert. Finally, we spend an unforgettable night in St. Louis with acclaimed jazz artists Terell Stafford and Tim Warfield, discovering what it truly means to make music happen.

    Powell Hall: A Musician’s View
Powell Symphony Hall – now The Jack C. Taylor Music Center — recently underwent a multi-year, multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation. Visitors now enter through an outdoor terrace area into the new Art Deco inspired lobby and box office, with a spiral staircase reminiscent of the one at the Guggenheim Museum. And that’s just what the audience sees. The changes also enhance the experience of the musicians on stage.

The Art of Pipe Organ Tuning
A behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep a giant pipe order in tune and working order and hear from the guy whose job it is to do just that.

    Sound Mixing
Sound mixers are unsung heros of concerts and stage performances. We sit down with Tim Albert to talk about just what that entails.

A Night in the Life of a Jazz Artist
Few people ever get a standing “O”. Jazz trumpeter Terell Stafford and tenor saxophonist Tim Warfield are familiar with that accolade. We meet in St. Louis.
