Great Scott! It’s Back to the Future Day!

Great Scott! It’s Oct. 21, 2015, which means it’s Back the the Future Day, and we’re officially living in the future.

In 1989, “Back to the Future Part II” was released, allowing co-writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale the opportunity to immortalize their predictions of what life would be like in 2015 on the big screen.

Since then, fans of the film have been eagerly waiting for the “future” in the movie and the actual date to align.

In the film, Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to the future — 4:29 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2015, to be exact — and come across a world of new inventions and high tech gadgets that seemed pretty far-fetched to the film’s 1980s audience. However, while the creators certainly missed the mark on some things, they were right about more than you think.

Get ready, guys. This is heavy. Here’s a look at some Back to the Future Day 2015 quotes and predictions.

    Prediction: Fingerprint Technology will exist

Right! In the film, future Jennifer uses her fingerprint to open the door to her house rather than a traditional key. While we may not be using fingerprint technology to open doors just yet, we have started using it to protect the privacy of our cellphones and other devices.

Prediction: Flying cars will replace traditional cars

Wrong! Sadly, where we’re going we still need roads. While “Back to the Future” got a good deal right about 2015, the prediction that flying cars would exist and be the main mode of transportation for Hill Valley residents missed the mark. Maybe we’re closer to making that a reality than we think though? Check back in another 30 years.

    Prediction: Video calls will exist

Right! Hey, remember when adult Marty uses a video call to chat with Needles in the future? Turns out, “Back to the Future II” creators were right about this one. With Facetime and Skype, talking face-to-face with friends and family all over the world is not only possible but relatively free.

Prediction: Power Laces will tie shoes for you

Wrong! Sorry, guys. You’ll have to just keep lacing up your Nike trainers the old fashioned way. While it seems like power lacing should be feasible by now, there aren’t any self-tying shoes on the market just yet. Sure, you can buy slip-on shoes that eliminate the issue all together, but why not have shoes that do it with some style?

Prediction: 3D Movies will be common

Right! In “Back to the Future II,” Marty McFly discovers movies are on another dimension. Now a days, 3D movies are pretty common thanks to IMAX 3D and its special glasses. And while 3D movies seem to be limited to kids flicks and action films, we’re still eagerly waiting for “Jaws 19” to hit theaters.

    Prediction: Hoverboards will exist

Wrong! While “Back to the Future II” predicted we’d be skateboarding on air by now, hoverboards, like flying cars, still aren’t happening. Sure, we’re getting close with hands-free segways, but it’s just not the same if the board can’t leave the ground.

    Prediction: Wearable technology will exist

Right! In the film, Marty’s future kids are preoccupied at the dinner table with watching TV through the technological devices they’re wearing. While Google Glass extends beyond just television, it definitely seems to have a lot in common with the visors and glasses the McFlys are sporting.

Prediction: Fax machines are the future

Wrong and right! Fax machines seem to be everywhere in “Back to the Future II,” which is both a right and wrong prediction for the future. Fax machines are still around and were relatively useful around 2000, but they’ve mostly been replaced with smart phones and computers these days. Of course, it’s still totally possible someone out there has a fax machine mounted to their bathroom wall.

Prediction: The Cubs will win the World Series

Maybe! In the film, Marty reads in the newspaper that the Cubs won the World Series in a 100-to-1 shot against Miami. When “Back to the Future II” was released, the Marlins hadn’t joined the national league so the creators accurately predicted the expansion. As far as the Cubs winning the world series, the jury’s still out…but it’s very unlikely.

In addition to giving us predictions about 2015, the “Back to the Future” franchise also gave moviegoers some timeless quotes that are recognized by all generations. To see some of the most popular quotes, check out the photo gallery above or read them below.
