History Spotlight: Lost Cemeteries and Body Snatchers

    In the 1849, the cholera epidemic came to St. Louis, overwhelming not only hospitals, but cemeteries as well. When one cemetery was closed, bodies were moved to an island in the middle of the Mississippi and Arsenal Island and the park was opened in its place. Tours Manager Amanda Clark tells us about St. Louis’ lost cemeteries and how Dr. Joseph Nash McDowell became known as a body snatcher.
