Missouri’s Education Crisis: An In-Depth Perspective

“In watching the local news coverage of the school transfer law, I never felt like I truly understood the law or the circumstances that caused all of the issues,” said Angie Weidinger of the problems the Missouri transfer law caused this summer.

Weidinger says the emotions of the involved families drowned out the facts of the story. And while those families certainly had a right to those feelings, she wanted citizens to better understand this issue by looking into the law, the facts and future plans.

This is the goal behind the latest episode of Behind the Minds, the local education program that Weidinger produces for HEC-TV. This groundbreaking series is celebrating its tenth year of bringing education issues and their solutions into the public arena.

Featured in the program are the policy makers and experts on the topic, as well as a knowledgeable panel that, in a thought-provoking discussion, further explains what must happen next in Missouri’s education system.

Members of the panel include: Rep. Rick Stream (R-Kirkwood), Rep. Tommie Pierson (D-Bellefontaine Neighbors) and Dr. Kathleen Sullivan Brown (UMSL Education expert).

“What was revealed was a system that many say is ‘in crisis’ and will take work from many different groups across our state to fix,” Weidinger says. She hopes that the program will give viewers a new, better-informed perspective of the important issue.

Since its premiere, the episode has received outstanding reviews. “Excellent reporting on this issue and very professional,” said Roger Kurtz, Executive Director, Missouri Association of School Administrators.

Behind The Minds: Missouri’s Education Crisis airs on HEC-TV Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Mondays at 11 a.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m. through November. It can also be viewed on demand at http://hectv.staging.wpengine.com/video/12671/september-2013-2/
