Mizzou Researcher Steps Up Wastewater Testing in Missouri to Look for Omicron Variant Cases

Scientists at the University of Missouri are vigilant, watching for the possibility of Omicron outbreaks in Missouri communities. Marc Johnson, PhD, professor of molecular microbiology and immunology, is the leading the investigation. His laboratory is collecting and testing wastewater samples from wastewater treatment facilities. Early in the pandemic, Johnson’s lab partnered with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to track COVID-19 and its variants in the state, under the Sewershed Surveillance Project. Johnson has stepped up wastewater testing looking for the presence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The Sewershed Surveillance Project has a website with a map and tracking tool that anyone can use to follow testing results: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/f7f5492486114da6b5d6fdc07f81aacf
