A new device designed to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding caused by uterine fibroids is introduced at Mercy Hospital St. Louis as part of the SonataTM study. The Sonata System is designed to access the inside of the uterus without any incisions. It uses sonography to locate and target the individual fibroids, and radiofrequency (heat) energy to treat the fibroids. Dr. David Levine, Director of Mercy Clinic Minimally Invasive Gynecology, says the heat energy can make the fibroids shrink and reduce fibroid-related symptoms.The investigational device must receive FDA approval before commercial sale and practice beyond the scope of the SonataTM study.
