Review of Hamilton at the Fox Theatre

Hamilton has returned to the Fox Theatre. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote book, music and lyrics, and if he is not a genius, who is?

This touring production is in very fine shape, tight, musical, funny, moving. Paul Tazewell’s costumes draw on the dress of the period. But the casting makes no pretense of matching the historical figures. George Washington is an Asian actor. Thomas Jefferson, as usual, is short and moves like a hip-hop kid from the hood. All of which helps make Miranda’s point: this is a story for all Americans.

David Korins’ ingenious set of levels and stairs has given director Thomas Kail and choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler ample resources for staging the story with clarity and invention.

I have seen Hamilton twice now, plus the video of the original Broadway production. I am ready for more.
