The Theater Circle Awards celebrates theatrical achievements in St. Louis professional theater — from the Muny to small companies performing in small spaces.

“That’s part of the St. Louis Theater Circle,” Mark Bretz of The Ladue News says. “Shows at the Fox and the Peabody, for example, are ineligible, because those are touring productions. The Circle pays tribute to locally produced professional theater.”

This year, 50 shows by 21 different professional theater companies received nominations from the Circle, comprised of 14 St. Louis theater critics. Stages St. Louis’ production of “Anything Goes” and Stray Dog Theatre’s production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” lead with nine and seven nominations, respectively.

The St. Louis Theater Circle is made up of critics who cover theater for St. Louis media: in print, online and on the air, including HEC-TV’s own Two on the Aisle host, Gerry Kowarski.

“We’re especially excited that HEC-TV is streaming and broadcasting this event live [again] for theater lovers everywhere!” Kowarski says. “We know that some of our honorees were watching the stream last year, from as far away as New York, and we want to make sure everyone, no matter where they are, can watch their fellow, local thespians.”

The 2016 St. Louis Theater Circle Awards will be presented on Monday, March 21, at the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts on the campus of Chaminade College Preparatory School, located at 425 S. Lindbergh Blvd.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a buffet and cash bar available. The awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. For a map of the Skip Viragh Center, click here.
