The Missouri Botanical Garden is playing a role in the largest agricultural transformation the world has seen in a few thousand years. The Global Inventory Project is giving researchers hope for a more sustainable way of growing crops by using perennials. Garden scientists are working with The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas and Saint Louis University to find those species of plants that would be good candidates for developing into perennial crops, which are crops that don’t need to be replanted every year. Most of the crops feeding the world are annual crops. Perennials would be more eco-friendly creating a more sustainable agriculture system by reducing soil erosion, tilling and less dependency on fertilizers and pesticides.
