Welcome Fall!

    By Kelly Maue

St. Louis summers can linger a little too long. But when seasons finally change, the crisp autumn air welcomes back some favorite activities like apple picking, scenic drives to soak up the changing fall colors, and evenings sitting around the fire pit. But there’s more to enjoy.

Hit up a farmers’ market. Many communities host them, big and small. It’s a chance to buy local produce, honey, flowers, and more – all while shopping and supporting local farmers and businesses.

Take a hike. There are seemingly countless places to explore! The larger-than-life Katy Trail, which spans nearly 240 miles across Missouri – and the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois – are two epic choices. And don’t forget all the local parks, bluffs, and waterways.

Switch up your space. Buy or make a seasonal wreath, decorate the mantel, and get out those cozy throws and pillows. A little aromatherapy, like a candle or simmer pot, will help get you in the fall frame of mind.

Plan and plant! Now’s the time to dig in those bulbs. You’ll be glad you did when there is a splash of color in the spring. And making an indoor herb garden will add an extra dimension to your recipes this winter.

Get out and about. Are you craving some vino? There are several wineries in the area. Or maybe ziplining is more your speed. To see some wildlife, visit the Endangered Wolf Center or drive through Lone Elk Park. No matter your interests, it’s a great time of year for a day trip.

Support sports. Whether it’s a professional team or your local high school, fall is a great time to take in a soccer match. Or get the gang together for a game of touch football.

Create in the kitchen. After the hot summer months, fall is the perfect time to get cooking! Root vegetables are abundant so put those carrots, potatoes and onions to good use. Tis the season for bread, pies, and hearty soups.

Visit a fall festival. Find your comfy flannel shirt and head outdoors. Sample tasty seasonal treats like apple cider and doughnuts and explore the pumpkin patches and corn mazes. These fairs and festivals are as different as their respective communities. Check out what’s in your area, or try one of these returning favorites:
