A team of researchers at Washington University is playing a major role in the global fight against Zika. First, they make an alarming discovery. Next, they identify new hope for the eventual treatment of Zika. Using mouse models, the scientists discovered Zika is targeting the male reproductive system, reducing fertility in male mice. Additionally, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine have identified a human antibody that prevents- in pregnant mice- the fetus from becoming infected with Zika and damage to the placenta. Researchers are now exploring if the antibody can make a difference in the infected adult male mice.
