The book ‘Black Girls in White Coats’ is helping to inspire young black women to consider a career in medicine. The author is an oncologic breast surgeon at SSM DePaul Hospital. According to SSM Health, less than 6% of U.S. physicians identify as African American. The book is an empowering, yet eye opening message to young black girls and women that they can do it if they work hard towards their goal. It provides powerful testimonies from 60 black female physicians who open up and share their unique experiences of working in medicine.
